Journal 7-Week 7
Monetization if anything is the best way to keep your independence as a game developer without selling the game to a publisher or larger company. Right now, games are monetized either through subscription or DLC or some microtransactions. Although, there are larger developers and publications that do practice all the different various means of monetization. If DLC or subscription is used for monetization, the game should be expansive enough to warrant the monthly or periodic fees. Microtransactions have been categorized as gambling so I think developers would not want to take that route. In the case of subscriptions, the subscription fee should not be something that only pays the server, the players should get something out of it. For DLC the content should be accessible to every player no matter their rank or level.
I would rather offer cosmetic content right on the release of the game with story and equipment coming out periodically. In order to avoid gambling laws, I would also keep the accessibility the same ratio for the same price. I prefer narratives so the content will be released to reflect the narratives and story of certain characters.
